The Difference Between an EMT and a Paramedic

EMT vs. Paramedic | The Cheap PlaceYou've probably heard the terms "EMT" and "Paramedic" used interchangeably, but what is the difference?

Paramedic and EMT Training

The main difference between a Paramedic and an EMT is the level of training that is required to do each job.  While both EMT's and Paramedics are first responders and provide care to patients on the way to the hospital, a Paramedic receives up to 1,800 hours of training, while an EMT is only required to complete up to 500.

Medication and Care

Another difference between these two professions is that a Paramedic is trained to administer 30-40 different medications based upon the situation, EMT's are only allowed to administer a handful.  EMT's have restrictions on the services they can perform and the medications they can provide.  Both provide basic life support, but Paramedics are trained in advanced life support for more dire or complex situations.
