Cell Phone Companies

I’ve been using a cell phone now for probably over 10 years. Over the years the prices of phones and plans got more and more affordable for just talking on the phone. Yet the phone companies have found very creative ways to charge me extra over the years.
When I first got to the United States I walked into a Bellsouth store and got a Nokia phone with a $40 a month service fee for 300 minutes a month. At first I thought I would never speak over 5 hours a month on the phone. Then after a few bills you realize each call whether it is a second long or not counts as a minute. So 10 calls a day was all that amounted to basically. And you better keep them under a minute! You find out when you are thinking you are going to get a $40 bill it some how amounts to $300 when they decide to charge you 35 cents a minute.
Text messaging was something extra. You got charged to send a text and to receive a text. I remember these adding a few hundred to my bill every now and then. And I did receive a few heart stopping bills with over a thousand dollars in text message charges.
Today, I have a phone that gives me free internet, talk all I want, and free texting. Costs me hundred bucks a month. It all starts with a $50 unlimited talk and $35 unlimited data plan. Add the tax and the hidden charges, you have a $100 minimum a month. And God help you if you so much as to step in to the Bahamas or Canada. My advise is to shut your phone off when you go to another country.
I did some math in my head the other day. I said to myself there are 200 million Americans that can use a cell phone if they had one. Perhaps say there are over 100 million cell phone subscribers today all paying an average of say $60 a month on phone service. What if instead of paying different companies an over priced $60 a month, everyone in America was charged $10 a month tax to own a mobile communication line provided to each and every taxpayer. A chip you could put in your phone, laptop computer, home entertainment system and have online access to do any kind of communication you like. I don’t know, isn’t $2 billion dollars a month not enough money to allow every American the right to communicate (that’s employing over 650,000 people at a $3000 monthly salary to make sure everyone is connected.) The technology infrastructure is available, but who from the government would step forward and give each and every American citizen a Blackberry like device they can use to vote on every single issue we wanted. Does the Government want to represent the people, or do they just want the votes once in a while. I don’t want to vote for him or her and not bother with the details. I want my government to hear the voice of the people by asking the people if they should pass such and such law. Is it not technologically possible to send a message to a phone asking to vote yes or no. I understand 10 years ago this was not possible, but today, it’s a different world out there.
I don’t mind being taxed $10 a month and getting rid of my $100 monthly phone plan from T-mobile.

Treasure Coast Bike Fest Experience

It has now been about two weeks since I attended the treasure coast bike fest as a vendor. I was meaning to write about it earlier but I’ve been very busy keeping up with orders. I thought I should take a 20 minute break and talk about the small weekend event at Fort Pierce, Florida.
On thursday we decided to call up the promoters and ask for a vending spot. They could get us in on a 10×20 for which we ended up paying $300 plus tax. So Friday morning we packed my minivan and headed down on a 2 hour ride down south to Fort Pierce. I guess one of the perks of living in Florida, on our way down we saw the shuttle launch into space from I-95. I thought that was pretty neat, I didn’t know there was going to be a launch on that day, just happened to catch the trailing white smoke rising through the blue skies. I did try to snap a photo but the trees got in the way every time I tried.
After a few hours of driving we came by the location which was right before the bridge that took you on the A1A side of the town. The setup area was nicely shaded with trees which was a big plus as it kept things cool over the weekend. The only problem was the dust from the ground which lacked grass.
I had a small display of saying patches and the rest of our tent had past event shirts and ladies tops. It took us about 2 hours to setup our tent and put up our merchandise ready to sell on Saturday morning. The promoter didn’t want the money right away before we even began to setup so I thought that was pretty nice of him to give us a day to make some money to pay the rent.
Overall we did make some money, took some pictures and met new people over the weekend. I cannot say it was a blast for sales. The turn out was not huge. I mean they were people there, but noone willing to spend more than $20. They had a concert area setup for Bikers to lay and chill on the grass while listening to live music. And I did hear some good music overall. Unfortunately the beer was terrible, yes for the first time I got myself a beer while vending from one of the Budweiser wagons. I thought I was drinking yellow water. Definitely not what beer should taste like that’s for sure.
Overall our expenses were pretty small as we only had to drive 2 hours and everything we had fit in my small minivan. We did not make crazy money, but we didn’t loose any either. I enjoyed the weekend talking to bikers about new ideas on patches, met some interesting people like Mike who had quite the showcase of scroll saw art of wooden creations. When you go to do little shows where the rent isn’t as ridiculous as some show like Daytona Bike Week, so you tend to see mom and pops with their original creations. I think this adds more value to the show as you get to see something different rather than t-shirts at every stop.
