Being a combat veteran does not necessarily mean that you were in a war.  A combat veteran is anyone who has seen combat, whether it was in a major war or a small border conflict.  Veterans often seek out the company of others after they leave the military because only other veterans really understand what they've gone through.  This is one reason why there are some veterans-only motorcycle groups.  They ride together but also take the time to support each other.

Being in combat is something few people can really imagine.  No movie or book can reproduce the horrors of war.  The emotions, the rush of adrenaline, the loud explosions, the sight of people falling over, none of this can be captured through film or words.  People have to truly experience combat to understand how horrible it is.

Letting others know that you're a combat veteran isn't showing off or bragging.  Instead, it is more of a way of showing that you have given a lot for your country and that you have seen some horrible things.  That's why some veterans wear this small Combat Veteran patch on their jacket.  It doesn't say a lot, it doesn't mention any conflict or even what part of the service the person wearing it was in.  It is simply a small way of saying that you have seen combat.

If you have a veteran friend who does not have a patch, you might want to give him or her one of these patches for Veterans Day.  It is a nice way of showing them that you appreciate their service.
