Older People Still Love Motorcycles

Older People and MotorcyclesMotorcycles are heavy, powerful, and somewhat dangerous.  Older people (those in their 70s or above) are weaker, frail, and often suffer from arthritis and other painful issues.  That must mean that the elderly should stay away from motorcycles, right?  That?s what many people probably think, but the fact of the matter is that there are many older bikers out there.  Some people don?t even buy their first motorcycle until they retire and are well into their sixties.  What is it about motorcycles that make people love them?  Everyone has his or her own reason for wanting to ride.

For Sister Mildred Boeh, that reason was to relive a bit of her past.  Sister Boeh used to teach at a boarding school, but on Saturdays, the nun would pin up her habit and go down to the local creek to wade around with some of the local boys.  She also loved going for rides on her neighbor?s motorcycle.  She would pester him for rides whenever she had the time.

In September, Sister Boeh celebrated her 101st birthday.  What does a centenarian nun do for fun on her birthday?  In this case, she checked out the nice Harley-Davidson motorcycle parked near the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse.  The motorcycle reminded her of the rides she used to take when she was younger.  She found the owner, a man who does maintenance for the house, and asked him for a ride.  The two spent some time zipping around the area, and Sister Boeh loved every minute of it.

If a 101-year-old nun can still hop on the back of a Harley, who?s to say that other elderly people can?t enjoy motorcycles?  Even those who don?t own their own bikes might enjoy the thrill.  They may not have any motorcycle club patches on their jackets, but that doesn?t mean they?re too old to go for a ride every now and then.
