Scenic Bike Routes: Creek Ride ? Dillsboro, IN

Creek Ride out of DillsboroEven though winter has not officially started yet, the American Midwest has already suffered the first blast of what could be a potentially stormy, polar vortex-dominated winter. So we wanted to give our readers in Indiana something to look forward to. Spring will be here before you know it, so make plans now to take the Creek Ride out of Dillsboro. This tiny little town in the southeast corner of the state is a great launching point for a wonderful 30-mile ride along the Laughery Creek.

The nicest thing about this ride is that it is both gentle and somewhat challenging at the same time. You will understand what we are talking about when you ride it. It is a ride that is suitable for bikers of any level, and a good ride for taking alone or as part of a small group.

Riding the Route

Begin your journey in the town of Dillsboro at Rt. 262. This route is a state road that heads south out of town toward the creek. A few miles out the road takes a sharp turn to the right as it approaches Laughery Creek. Just before you get to the creek, make a right-hand turn onto West Laughery Creek Rd. You'll travel another 3 miles or so before the road forks; take the left fork toward the creek. Just for the record, the right fork eventually comes to a dead end. So if you miss the turnoff you won't get lost. Just turn around and head back.

Follow West Laughery Creek Rd. as it winds its way south toward the creek's Bells Branch. When it comes to an end, make a left onto Bells Branch Rd. and cross the creek. Continue to Milton Bear Branch Rd. and hang a left. About 5 miles or so up the road you'll come to Scholle Hill Rd.; turn left here and then right on Laughery Creek Rd. This will take you back up to Milton Bear Branch Rd. and eventually Rt. 262. Make a left onto 262 heading back to Dillsboro.

Scenery and Rd. Conditions

The scenery on this ride is what you would expect from Indiana. You'll pass through some terrific rolling countryside that includes picturesque farmlands and views of the creek that remind you of a certain novel from one Samuel Clemens. You will also experience what seems like an unlimited number of twisties that will allow you to really practice your bike handling skills. None of them is dangerous, mind you, but they are a lot of fun.

You will be pleased to know that the road conditions are excellent along this route. The local highway authorities do a good job of keeping the road up, including repairing damage and getting rid of debris. The only time you might have difficulty is within a day or so of heavy rain along certain portions of the creek. Other than that, you shouldn't have any trouble at all.

Be sure to gas up before you leave Dillsboro. There is literally nothing by way of amenities along this ride. But that's okay, because it's only 30 miles of travel. You can head out at midmorning and return to town for a leisurely lunch before moving on. This ride is a delightful way to spend a beautiful spring day in Indiana.
