Scenic Bike Routes: Crow Mountain, Alabama

Crow Mountain, AlabamaAs motorcycle season is drawing to a close in the North and Midwest, it is just getting started in the South and Southwest. So for today's post, we are turning our attentions to a scenic and challenging route in Alabama. This is the Crow Mountain Loop beginning and ending in Scottsboro.

If you've never seen the interior of Alabama, this is truly a ride you must take. Nothing shows off America's Deep South more than the Crow Mountain area. However, be prepared to take it slow, this 60-mile ride offers plenty of twists, turns, and switchbacks.

Riding the Route

The ride begins at Willow Street in Scottsboro. You will head north out of town on Rt. 21 into Crow Mountain. Rt. 21 turns into 470/33 about halfway to the northern end of the loop. You will continue following Rt. 33 until you come to Rt. 79. At that point, you will turn south.

Rt. 79 carries you back down the mountain and right to the western edge of Scottsboro. But don't worry; you're not done yet. You will pick up Rt. 30 South to Woodville, Alabama. This quaint little town is a warm and friendly place and a great destination for a late lunch or early dinner before heading back to Scottsboro.

Leaving Woodville you will want to take Route 63 S. to Interstate 72. From there it is an 18-mile journey back up to the Scottsboro exit to complete the loop. This is the only portion of divided highway you'll see on the entire loop. Interstate 72 is a major through route, but traffic is very manageable.

Scenery and Road Conditions

The scenery you will encounter on the Crow Mountain Loop is both rustic and rural at the same time. At some points you'll wonder if civilization is anywhere close by while at other times you'll be passing small clusters of houses in neat little rows. Along the way there are a few small towns you will swear came out of a 1950s TV show.

Be sure to fill up with gas before you leave Scottsboro. While there are a few small gas stations along the way, you will pay more than you would if you wait until you get to Woodville. Pikeville is a good place to stop for hamburger; if you want something more you will probably have to wait to get to Woodville as well.

As for the road conditions, they vary. The pavement is mostly solid all the way around with a few areas of soft shoulder. Nevertheless, this is rural Alabama. There may be some areas of broken pavement and gravel to watch out for. Also, be sure to watch your speed if you are a novice. Some of the turns and switchbacks can be surprising if you're not paying attention.

Overall, this is a great ride for bikers of all levels. However, we recommend novices ride with more experienced bikers just for safety's sake. This run will improve your riding skills if you approach it with the right attitude.
