Choppers vs Street Bikes: The Cold Hard Truth

chopper-1The difference between a chopper and street bike (crotch rocket as some you folks like to call 'em) is like night and day. In terms of appearance, choppers are known for their long, stretched-out framework with long handlebars and big front wheels, while street bikes are smaller and more compact. But there are other differences between shoppers and street bikes that shouldn't go unnoticed. If you're in the market for a new bike and can't decide between a Harley or crotch rocket, keep reading to learn some of the unique features of each.

Old School and New School

While there are always exceptions to this rule, you'll typically see more seasoned, old school bikers riding choppers. Chopper-style Harleys have been around since the end of the World War II era. During this time, American soldiers coming home from the war were looking to ride bikes but were satisfied with the Harley's style and design. With a little bit of modification work (AKA chopping), these WWII vets shortened the fenders on their Harleys while adding longer handlebars.

If you're on the roads long enough, you'll see old school bikers on both choppers and crotch rockets. For the most part, though, the new generation prefers street bikes while the older generation prefers choppers.

Comfort

Of course, comfort is another major difference between choppers and street bikes that's worth noting. Due to their small, compact design, many riders feel cramped up or even squished when riding on a crotch rocket. Choppers, on the other hand, are built with an emphasis on the comfort. Their long, stretched out seats offer a superior level of relaxation and comfort. If you're looking for a comfortable ride, stick  with a chopper. You can quite literally kick back with your legs out in front and enjoy the road while cruising on a chopper.

Drive

Choppers are built more for driving over long stretches of open American highway, while street bikes are designed for curvy city streets. When choosing between a chopper and street bike, ask yourself -- where do I plan on riding? Most people enjoy the kicked back style of open chopper riding simply because it's more relaxing. Other people, however, may prefer the maneuverability of a street bike in the city.

Hopefully, this will give you a better understanding of the differences between choppers and street bikes. In short, choppers are built for riding long stretches of road with an emphasis on comfort, while street bikes are designed for maneuverability.
