Motorcycle LED Lights

Motorcycle LED Lights All motorcycles need lights; however, not all lights are equal.  Many motorcycles riders have taken to installing LED headlights, taillights, and other lights on their bikes.  These lights have a number of advantages over traditional lights.  They can be used as regular lights, as accent lights, or as daytime running lights.

Why Use LEDs?

There are a number of reasons to install LEDs on your motorcycle.  If you want to add something new to your bike that really makes it stand out, you can add accent lights.  These will make people notice your motorcycle, especially at night, and they are another way of customizing your bike after you've given it a custom paintjob, handles, mirrors, etc.

These bulbs are also energy efficient and can last for much, much longer than traditional bulbs.  They are also lightweight, so they will not add a lot of extra weight to your bike.  Another great advantage of these bulbs is that they do not get hot, a typical LED produces 3.4 BTUs every hour, while a traditional bulb produces upwards of 85!  That's a waste of almost 90 percent of all energy the light produces.

Cost

Adding LED lights to your motorcycle does not have to be expensive.  In fact, you can often find DIY LED light kits starting at around $60, although some may cost as much as $300-400.  These kits can be used to install small LEDS all over your bike.  The cost depends on how many LEDs you want and what features you want them to have.  LEDs that change colors are going to be more expensive than solid-color LEDs, for example.

If you just want to add LED headlights to your bike, the cost may be less.  Adding LED strip lights can be as cheap as $40 or so, although some LED bulbs for specific motorcycles can be $100 or more.

You can also have mechanics or professional motorcycle experts install your LED lights, but unless you are good friends, they will charge an installation fee.  This fee depends on how long it takes them to install the lights and will vary from person to person. Expect to pay at least $100 for this service in addition to the cost of the LEDs though.

Life Expectancy

LED lights can last for years.  The small accent LEDs draw very little energy and may never need to be changed.  LED bulbs used for headlights or taillights, of course, may not last quite as long because they do draw a little more power (although not as much as standard bulbs).  A standard LED headlight should last for upwards of 60,000 hours of use.  That's longer than traditional, halogen, and HID bulbs.

Before Installing LEDs

Before you can install LEDs on your bike, you first need to decide if you are going to add accent lights or headlights.  If you're adding headlights and the bulbs fit your motorcycle, there's no problem.  If they don't, you may need to purchase a light kit and modify the motorcycle to accept LED bulbs.  In this case, you may want to talk to a mechanic.  Adding accent lights is fairly easy, just buy the kit with the lights you want and follow all applicable instructions.
