Scenic Bike Routes: Geneva to Ithaca, NY

Geneva to Ithaca, NYWith the start of the fall season just around the corner, now is a great time to make plans to ride through the Finger Lakes region of New York. This portion of the Empire State is well known for its fall colors and beautiful lake scenery. You may prefer seeing the leaves turn in other states such as Pennsylvania and Michigan, but there is something unique about New York's Finger Lakes.

Our Geneva-to-Ithaca ride is a 60-mile journey that travels more like a daylong event. It pays to just slow down and enjoy yourself. Best of all, it's not a complicated ride by any means. You'll be able to take in all of the beautiful scenery without having to worry about dangerous dips, curves, and high traffic volumes.

Riding the Route

There are numerous ways to get from Geneva to Ithaca, we chose a route that will provide maximum exposure to the fall colors and Seneca Lake. You'll start at the south end of the city of Geneva on Rte. 14. If you are interested in enjoying an overnight stay, there is a wonderful hotel/bed-and-breakfast located just south of the city on the shores of Seneca Lake. It's called the Geneva On The Lake. It is well known in the area for its warm accommodations and beautiful setting.

As you head south out of Geneva, you will have Seneca Lake to your left and the hills of the Finger Lakes region to your right. You'll follow Rte. 14 for approximately 30 miles or so, all the way to the southern tip of the Lake. From there you pick up Rte. 79 east to Ithaca. As you can see, it's a very simple route with just one turn. However, the pleasure of this ride is not in the roads; it is in the lake and autumn colors.

Scenery and Road Conditions

For those who love the water, Seneca Lake is an excellent draw all by itself. Most of Rte. 14 is slightly elevated as compared to the lake, so you'll be able to look down at the water and across to the other side. That's where you'll see most of the color. Depending on how late in the season you go, you might even notice the colors change the further south you ride. Making the turn toward Ithaca takes you away from the lake and through a series of hills and valleys with color on every side.

Both Rte. 14 and 79 are major routes, so they are always well maintained. But don't worry about traffic. The rural nature of the area keeps cars to a minimum. You should be able to take your time and thoroughly enjoy your ride.

Along the way, you will pass several small towns with numerous gas stations and restaurants. There are plenty of places to stop for rest and relaxation. When you finally do make it to Ithaca, you'll also find plenty of choices for overnight accommodations. If you prefer to turn around and head back to Geneva, just head up Rte. 96 N. to Rte. 20 W. You'll end up re-entering Geneva from the east side of town. You'll also get to take in a lot more of those beautiful fall colors.
