Nebraska, the Cornhusker State, sits on the Great Plains in the Midwestern area of the United States.  It's mostly flat prairie and is very rural.  The state is also the eighth least-populated state in the U.S.  The capital of Nebraska is Lincoln, although its largest city is Omaha.

The name 'Nebraska' comes from a word from the Otoe tribe.  It means 'flat water', a name that was originally from the Platte River, one of the major rivers in the state.  Many other indigenous tribes lived in the area, including the Omaha, the Missouria, the Pawnee, and the Ponca.  French-Canadians were the first explorers to enter Nebraska, although the Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first to truly explore the area.  In 1819, the United States established Fort Atkinson in the territory, the first Army post to be established west of the Missouri River.

Nebraska became the 37th state of the United States on March 1, 1867.  Since then, it has become a leading state in the production of beef and pork.  Many people in Nebraska can trace their family history to German and Czech immigrants.
