Scenic Bike Routes: Thomasville to Jackson, AL

Thomasville Thomasville

Alabama's Clark County is one of the more rural areas of the Cotton State. It is heavily wooded and teeming with rolling hills and flat-topped plateaus. As such, it is a great place to take a nice, quiet ride on a sunny weekend morning. You'll be able to relax and gather your thoughts as you admire the beautiful surroundings.

There is a nice, 56-mile ride you can take between Thomasville and Jackson almost any time of the year. And being that Clark County is in the southwest portion of the state, there is easy access from either Mobile or Montgomery. Just be sure to gas up in Thomasville before you leave town. There is virtually nothing along the way, save one small gas station in Coffeeville.

Riding the Route

Start your journey in Thomasville anywhere near the center of town where routes 43 and 154 intersect. The quickest way to get to Jackson would be to head straight down 43. But we don't want quick, we want scenic. So instead, take Rt. 154 out of town heading south. You will twist and turn as the miles roll by, gradually making your way toward Rt. 69 south. Make a left hand drive into Coffeeville.

Continue on 69 through Coffeeville. Note that 69 joins up with routes 12 and 84 for a short distance just outside of town. They will divide again with Rt. 69 continuing south. From there you will ramble and roll all the way to Jackson. It is a pretty simple ride in terms of directions.

Scenery and Road Conditions

Road conditions all along the route are fairly good. However, parts of this ride take you through heavily forested areas. You'll need to be on the lookout for fallen branches, gravel, and any other debris that could pose a problem. During the summer months, it could take a while for a heavy rain to dry up under the canopy, so be mindful of that as well.

Experienced riders will find the twists, turns, and hills to be pleasantly challenging enough for an enjoyable ride. Beginners may need to slow down in some spots, especially the area of Route 69 about halfway between Coffeeville and Jackson. There are a couple of sharp turns that could be a problem if you're not paying attention.

Where the scenery is concerned, this ride is all about the woods. If you can imagine a quiet country road carved through a forest in the middle of nowhere, it should be easier to imagine this ride in your mind. Along the way, you will see some lovely residential properties along with some houses that will cause you to question the sanity of anyone who would live in them.

Our favorite part of the ride is the various plateaus you encounter along the way. The slightly higher elevations make good places to stop and look out over the countryside. It is almost as though some of these areas have been purposely kept clear of trees just so you can look around.

If you are coming from Mobile or Montgomery for this ride, you can easily make it an overnight trip. Both Thomasville and Jackson are large enough to incorporate a couple of hotels and plenty of restaurants. With that in mind, enjoy!
