The AK-47 was originally developed in Russia during the mid-1940s. It was created by Mikhail Kalashnikov and was called the Avtomat Kalashnikova. When it started to gain worldwide use, the name was shortened to AK-47. It was built upon the AK-46 but was slightly different because of the shoulder stock design. The AK-47 was one of the first rifles included in what was termed the second generation of assault weapons that began with the German StG 44. While the Soviet Armed Forces officially adapted it back in 1949, the weapon is still widely used today. There are a number of different modern versions of the AK-47. For example, there is the AKM, which is a lighter version of the gun. The RPK is a hand-held machine gun version of the AK-47.
