How To Iron On a Patch To a Vest

ironing-1So, your bad ass biker patch arrived in the mail and now you're ready to put it on your vest. Assuming you purchased the patch here at TheCheapPlace.com, you have two different options: you can either sew it on using a needle and nylon thread, of you can iron it on. Sewing is pretty self-explanatory, but you'll need to follow some simple rules if you plan on ironing the patch to your vest.

Note: do not use the iron-on method for leather or suede vests, as it can literally melt the material. Stick with good old fashioned needle and thread for these materials.

Step #1) Prep The Area

Start by laying your vest out on an ironing board or similar flat surface. Be sure to pull out the sides so it's not bunched up in the center. The patch obviously won't go on well if your vest is bunched up or wrinkled. And if you haven't done so already, decide where exactly you want to apply the patch.

Step #2) Warm It Up

Next, warm up your vest by placing a pillow case over it and running a high-heat iron over it a couple of times. This should warm the fabric up so the patch applies more smoothly. In the rare event that you don't have a pillowcase laying around your house, use an old t-shirt. The bottom line is that you need something to protect your vest from iron burns. Pillowcases tend to work well due to their thick cotton construction, but an old t-shirt will suffice.

Step #3) Apply It

The third step is the actual patch application. Remove the pillowcase and line the patch up on the desired location. Before proceeding, check to make sure the patch is even and not tilted towards the left or right. Trust me, there's nothing more frustrating that spending all of this time ironing on a patch only to find out later that it's lopsided. If necessary, use a ruler to help define even lines on your vest.

With your patch placed on your vest, gently lay the pillowcase back over it (go slow to avoid accidentally moving the patch). Now iron back over the pillowcase to secure it to your vest. The heat from the iron will melt the glue located on the back of the patch, securing it to the vest. Remove the pillowcase and voila, your bad ass biker patch is now applied to the vest!
