Lone Wolf

Howling Wolf Moon Patch LargeWhy does a lone wolf howl at the moon?  When a wolf is lost and has lost his pack is the main reason a wolf howls at the moon. Until the pack returns to the location or it locates it's pack it will continue to howl. They get separated many times when they wander off to find prey. To keep the wolves together a howl serves as a form of social cohesion.

On the other hand a young wolf howls anytime without a real reason. When an adult returns with food a young cub will howl to let the adult know that it is hungry.

Wolves also howl in different tones to fool their enemy. They can change the tone to appear that there are more wolves, two can sound like many.

Being nocturnal wolves often pipe up during the night. They lift their heads for acoustics and can be heard for up to six miles in the forest and up to ten miles in the treeless tundra.

Fire alarms, gps's and sing-alongs are the many purposes of the howl. Howling will become more frequent in the evening and early dawn when wolves hunt. Lone wolves don't howl as much so the can hide their whereabouts from potential predators.
