Swiss Dairy's fleet has been enlisted by the California Highway Patrol to help spread the message:Look Twice, Save a Life." The trucks will be carrying a safety reminder to look out for motorcyclists as they travel the Inland area of Temecula.
Over two hundred trucks will carry the public safety message as they travel hours upon hours on the road. By putting the message in an unexpected spot Officer Sanchez of the California Highway Patrol said he hopes it will grab motorists' attention and encourage drivers to make a habit of looking twice every time they change lanes. He went on to say with the hours and miles these trucks put on the road they will be the ideal messenger.
Fleet safety manager for Dean's Foods. the parent company of Swiss Dairy said out of the two hundred and twenty trucks a quarter of them have had their signs installed. The company has a large distribution center in Riverside, California. They cover an area from Oxnard to the U.S - Mexico border.
The California Highway Patrol Temecula area office had a grant-funded awareness and enforcement campaign in 2010 and 2011 targeting the Ortega Highway, making motorcycle safety the focus. The area has seen an uptick in motorcycle crashes since the campaign ended.
Seventy nine motorcycle crashes have been investigated in Southwest California by the Temecula - area highway patrol since the beginning of the year. There were sixty two injuries and three fatalities.
