A Blast from the Past Patch

In your Face PatchOkay friends, it's time for another useless trivia question. Before I get to it however, let me introduce to you the patch that has prompted the question. It is the In Your Face patch that just recently arrived in the Funny Patches section.

With that out of the way here's the question (it's actually a two-part question): do you know the origin of the phrase "in-your-face" in terms of pop culture, and can you give me the decade which spawned it? While you're thinking about, let's talk about the patch.

This 3" x 2" offering is very creative in its design. As you can see, the letters get a bit larger toward the center of the patch while the overall shape of the piece presents a curved design. The combination of these two elements suggests almost 3-D effect - as if someone were pushing the center of the patch out toward your face. It's a masterful concept considering what the phrase says. I'm thinking if this patch were mounted in a strategic location it could spur some very interesting comments.

As for the trivia question, "in-your-face" was a phrase made popular in the 1970s in relation to sports. When one competitor dominated another he would get nose to nose and scream "in your face!" The phrase originally came from the 1976 basketball novel written by Charles Rosen entitled, A Mile Above the Rim.

And now you know...so go buy a patch.
