Connecticut was added to the United States in 1788 and was the 5th state of the Union.  It was named after the Connecticut River, although many people assume the river was named after the state.  Connecticut has several different nicknames, including the Constitution State, the Nutmeg State, the Provisions State, and the Land of Steady Habits.  It might have many names, but the state is one of the smallest in the U.S., it's the third smallest.

Connecticut was first settled by the Dutch, although their settlements were soon abandoned.  The English created the first long-term towns in the state in the 1630s.  Today, the capital city is Hartford, although the largest city in the state is Bridgeport.

If you're from Connecticut, you're in good company.  The state is the birthplace of Noah Webster, the famous author of Webster's Dictionary.  President George W. Bush was also born in the state.  A number of other famous people have lived in Connecticut, including author Mark Twain, actress Meg Ryan, animator Seth MacFarlane, businessman P.T. Barnum, and actress Katharine Hepburn.

Even though it's a small state, Connecticut has a lot to see and do.  There are several different sports teams based in the state, including ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and rugby teams.  Yale University, one of the most prestigious universities in the U.S., is located in Connecticut.  The moderate climate also draws many people to the area, and it's a great place to take a bike ride.
