Origins of the Gadsden Flag

This flag was created by American general and statesman Christopher Gadsden in 1775 during the American Revolution. The coiled snake on the flag is a Timber Rattlesnake. This snake was found in the area of the original thirteen colonies and, over time, became a symbol of American ideals and society. It was originally meant to be used by the Commander in Chief of the American Navy. The rattlesnake symbol has been in official use by the US Army for over 236 years.

Modern Uses of the Gadsden Flag

Although the Gadsden Flag was replaced with the Stars and Stripes Flag, it has enjoyed resurgences as a symbol of patriotism, conflict with the government, and civil liberties. It is often related to political movements such as libertarianism and the American Tea Party.
