Support PTSD Awareness

Teal Ribbon PatchMany soldiers who have seen active duty, especially combat that involves death, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD.  They may have nightmares and flashbacks for decades after they see conflict.  Even with a lot of therapy and counseling, they may have to deal with PTSD for the rest of their lives.  However, some people, especially those who are not in the military and have never gone through any sort of stressful, life or death event, do not understand PTSD or believe it's even real.

There are a number of bikers who have served in the military.  Some are retired soldiers who focus on riding and maintaining their bikes as a way of having something to do.  They focus on their bikes as a way of taking their minds off the horrors they've seen and the things they've done.  However, just because they focus on something else does not mean their PTSD is gone.  This is one of the reasons there are some motorcycle clubs that are made up of only active or retired military personnel.  Since they all have some common experiences, they can more easily understand PTSD and what it means.  Getting together with other soldiers can be more helpful than therapy for some people.

If you are dealing with PTSD or if you're a family member or friend of someone who is, you may want to do everything you can to raise awareness of this issue.  The teal ribbon has been designated as the official PTSD awareness symbol.  Bikers can add a teal ribbon patch to their jacket to let others know that PTSD is real and that those who deal with it should be treated with honor and respect.
