When you are out on your bike exploring the world, you never know what's going to happen. Your bike may break down, you might run out of gas (oops!), or you might end up crashing and needing to find some way back to civilization on your own. Alternatively, you might simply decide to go hiking through the woods and find yourself in need of a tool you left behind in your motorcycle saddlebags. No matter what the case, you can have everything you need to get out of any situation if you carry one of these survival kits. Best of all, everything is so small you can fit it in an old Altoids tin!
What you should have in your kit:
- a small flashlight
- a compass
- a folding knife
- a whistle
- a mini lighter
- a razor blade
- a few cotton balls
- a dollar bill
- dental floss
- glue
- band aids
- tweezers
- fishing hooks and sinkers
- two needles
- pins
- a small mirror
- water purification tablets
- a coffee filter
- waterproof matches
- electrical tape
- small folded square of tin foil (a foot or so)
- MRE beverage bag
- alcohol prep pads.
That may seem like a lot of stuff, and you might not think it will all fit into an Altoids tin, but you'd be surprised at how small these items are. You can find many of these items at stores that focus on hunting, fishing, and camping. They are often designed to fit in backpacks and other small bags. You can also use electrical tape to tape things to the top and the sides of the tin. For example, you can tape a small mirror (such as from a makeup compact) to the top. You can also attach your tape pieces to the sides. Even after you pull them off, they should still be somewhat sticky.
If you can't fit everything in, prioritize. The most important item in the kit is a knife. There are many different things you can use it for, so be sure you can fit it in your tin. A flashlight, whistle, and water purification tablets should also be prioritized.
