A Careful with Police and Firefighter Patches

I know July just started, but there are some people I know who are already preparing for this year's Halloween celebration. To be fair, these are people who make their own costumes every year with the intention of always doing better than the year before. This year one couple my wife and I know are making police and firefighter costumes. I told them about The Cheap Place because I've seen some of the awesome embroidered patches they have.

For example, they carry a couple of police shields and a highway patrol patch that look just like anything you'd see on a real uniform. Throw in some stock patches with titles like "officer" and "police", and you have the potential of making a very realistic uniform. I mention this only to offer a word of caution: many state and local governments have very strict regulations about impersonating rescue workers of any kind; be they police officers, firefighters, or EMTs.

If you're going to make a costume with these types of patches on them you have to add something to it that really distinguishes it from the real thing. If not, and you were ever stopped by a police officer, you could be charged with impersonation. One suggestion is that you make sure you don't put a city or state name on your uniform anywhere. For firefighter uniforms don't designate a specific department such as "NYFD". It should be blatantly obvious to anyone that you're not a real officer if these things are missing.

That said, the rest is entirely up to you. If you want to make your costume extra special there are plenty of other embroidered patches you can buy from The Cheap Place. Just use your imagination and have fun!
