A Heartwarming Tribute to Vets

Yesterday was Memorial Day here in the United States; a day when we honor those who have served in the military and died in defense of our country. Of all our patriotic holidays it is perhaps the most moving because it's so personal to so many of us. Having just recently learned of my own ancestors, some of whom served and died in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, this year's Memorial Day was even more special.

I was honored to attend a parade in my hometown, joining tens of thousands of others cheering and clapping for the veterans as they marched by. It was amazing to see all those dress uniforms looking perfect; embroidered patches, emblems, and medals speaking of who they were and what they did. From the Korean War Army medic to the Vietnam gunner to the Iraq war infantry soldier, all were there representing America's finest.

Following at the end of the parade was a group of teen boys not quite ready for military service, but serving their communities nonetheless. This was a volunteer group of youths and their adult leaders offering their services to help the community during natural disasters and other times they were needed. They all wore uniforms decked out with custom-made and stock patches to designate the group's identity and the ranks and accomplishments of some of the kids. I was very impressed.

It won't surprise me to see some of these young earning military patches once they graduate from high school. They already have a mind to serve those in need, so serving their country in uniform is a logical next step many of them will choose. It stirs my heart to know my ancestors fought for my freedom and our progeny hopefully will fight to maintain it.
