A List of Gear for a New Biker

Are you just getting in to motorcycle riding?  If so, you might need to buy some gear.  There are a lot of different items out there that you can buy and customize with motorcycle patches, but as a new rider, you might not want to buy them all right away.  This is because it can get very expensive.  Instead, you might want to get only the basics to start with and slowly build up your set of gear as you go.  Here's a list of the necessary gear that you'll need to start riding safely:

  • A helmet.  Even though your state may not have helmet laws, it's still a good idea to have one, even if it's just a half-shell helmet.  You don't want to crash without some kind of protection for your head.
  • A good jacket.  This will also provide you some protection if you crash, plus it will keep you warm.  There's a lot of wind that hits you when riding, so it's essential that you have some kind of protection from it.  Leather jackets are often worn by bikers because they're very durable.  You can also pick up a few different biker patches to decorate your jacket with.
  • Gloves.  Your hands will get cold, too, and they'll need some protection.  Gloves can also give you a better grip on your handlebars.
  • Good, durable jeans.  While some bikers do wear leather pants to match their jacket, some people find leather too restrictive, hot, or uncomfortable.  A good pair of jeans will offer a lot of protection and is much more comfortable.

You may also be tempted to buy a pair of biker boots, but those can actually wait a bit.  The same goes for a vest.  If you don't buy a helmet, though, you should invest in a warm cap for winter riding.
