If you've never ridden a bike before and are looking to start, you might think all you need to buy is your motorcycle and a helmet (and some people don't even bother with that). However, there are a few other things a biker needs, some of which you might not immediately think of. Here's a quick reference guide to things a new biker should buy before starting out.
While some people do not like wearing helmets, it is a good idea to get one for safety. You don't have to buy a full helmet, though. There are half-shell and three-quarter-shell helmets that still offer some protection while leaving your face uncovered. Take a look at a few of the different helmet options before you dismiss purchasing one completely.
Many bikers love to purchase a nice jacket to wear as their 'official' biker jacket. They will add a number of biker patches to it that show off their personality and the rallies they have been to. You can also purchase riding gloves, chaps, shirts, and many other items designed specifically for bike riding.
New bikers who live in warm areas often don't think about buying cold weather gear or rain gear, but if you plan on riding your bike cross country or any fairly long distance, you may need these things. You also might want to invest in a bike cover, especially if you don't own a garage. You don't want your bike being left out in the rain.
Don't forget saddlebags or a small trunk. You'll need some place to store your gear or other items. This is especially true if you're going to be using your motorcycle as your main form of transportation.
