For the last 10 years Christian motorcycle club Bikers for Christ has held an annual bike blessing and fund raising event for bikers in Southern California. The event is designed to invoke prayers of blessing for the safety of riders during the coming season, raise funds for the Downed Biker Fund, and encourage fellowship among riders from clubs all around the area. This year's event was held on April 15 (2012) at Kennedy's Custom Cycles in Oceanside.
Bikers who attend can look around and see custom club colors, lone wolves, and stock patches from all across the spectrum. It is not confined to Christian bikers or even sanctioned clubs. Bikers of all stripes are welcome to attend, and they do - this year to the tune of more than 300. The event's main organizer, Bikers for Christ pastor Fred Zariczny, led a group of club members praying for everyone who came regardless of what they rode. He also offered a ceremony for married couples who wanted to renew their vows.
The other important aspect was the fundraising. All of the money raised goes to the ministry's Down to Biker Fund, which provides financial relief to bikers injured in crashes. The financial assistance helps them and their families with incidental expenses while they wait for their insurance payments. The Downed Biker Fund, just like the annual bike blessing, is not confined to Christian bikers or members of the Bikers for Christ club.
An event like this proves that the colors and Christian stock patches the Bikers for Christ wear on their vests are not merely for show. It is a way of life for individuals who have dedicated themselves to sharing the love of Jesus Christ to all who listen, primarily those in the motorcycle community.
