Biking With Your Kids

Like all adults, if you have children, you probably want to share some of your hobbies with them.  If that includes biking, you might want to get them up on the bike with you.  However, there are some big safety concerns with this, especially with small children, because bikes do not have child car seats.  That doesn't mean you can't bike with your kids, but it does mean you may have to wait until they are a little bit older.

Riding with an infant or toddler is almost impossible.  About the only thing you can do is roll gently up your driveway or in a parking lot with the engine off.  Even that isn't really recommended.  Some bikers think it's OK to put their baby in a harness that straps to their chest.  Again, this may be fine for low-speed gliding in a parking lot, but it is not safe for use on the road.  Your baby has absolutely no protection.

As they get older, however, kids can ride behind you on your bike.  You will want to get them proper riding gear, of course.  They do sell child and teen sized helmets, riding jackets, and other safety gear, and you'll want to make sure you teach your kid how to properly wear all of these items.  You might also let him or her pick out a few motorcycle patches to customize their gear with so that they feel like a real biker.  Also make certain they know how to safely ride a bike.

Once they turn 16, they might even want a bike of their own instead of a car.  If they have safely ridden with you and can demonstrate (in a parking lot or other abandoned area) that they can handle your bike, you might think about letting them become a proper biker.
