Budgeting for your Motorcycle Hobby

Motorcycling, like any hobby, requires money.  Unlike some hobbies, though, it has a lot of up-front costs (the largest being buying a motorcycle) and can require a lot of money for upkeep.  However, most people only think about what it will cost to buy a bike, put gas in it, and make the occasional repairs. They don't always take into consideration how much money they will need for other things, such as their riding gear and lodging if they're driving long distances.  These things all add up, especially at the beginning when you have to make a lot of one-time purchases.  Here are a few things you will need to work into your budget if you're going to get into biking.

The major expense will be your motorcycle, but some people don't take into account the other item they might need to get.  You may need to get new handlebars or foot pegs to make it more comfortable to ride, especially if you're really tall or short.  You might also want to get a different seat if you find it uncomfortable.  All of this customizing will cost money, of course.  You have to buy the custom parts and may need to pay to have them installed.

You might also need to get extra saddlebags, a trailer, or a sidecar, especially if you're planning on using your bike for daily transportation or if you're going to take major trips.  Then you need to buy all your riding gear (jacket, gloves, helmet, etc.) and maybe a second helmet if you're going to have a passenger.  Beyond that, you may want to buy iron on patches to decorate your gear with.  These motorcycle patches really let you customize your jacket, so you shouldn't pass them by.
