Courtesy When Riding with Others

There are a number of unwritten rules of the road that we follow as motorists.  We know not to get too close to another vehicle and to slow down when we see another car pulling off to the side of the road with its hazard lights on.  But when it comes to motorcycle riders, these rules are somewhat different, and there are more of them.  Bike riding isn't the same as driving a car, after all, and if you plan on riding with your fellow bikers, you need to be sure you're courteous to them.  If you're not, you may not be invited to ride with them again.

Unlike cars and other larger vehicles, bikers can ride two abreast in a lane.  However, if you're not an expert rider, this can be a little dangerous.  It's also not a good idea to ride that close in bad weather or high winds since you never know when you might go a little off course.  If you haven't ridden with the other biker before, you might also want to maintain a good distance between your bikes until you get to know his or her riding habits and patterns.

If you're riding with a motorcycle club, there are some additional rules to follow.  For example, usually one biker will be designated the leader and one will be tasked with riding at the end of the group to make certain no one gets left behind.  You should never pas s the appointed leader or drop back behind the back rider.  You also shouldn't make unscheduled stops unless absolutely necessary or unless your bike is having problems.  If you do have to make a stop, you should signal one of the officials so the rest of the group can also pull over.
