Dealing with the Wind and the Cold

No biker likes to ride in the high winds or in the horrible cold, but sometimes, it's absolutely necessary.  Some people live in cold areas where they have to endure the cold if they're going to ride at all, and others find themselves in high winds or storms when they're out on a long trek.  But there are a few things you can do to help protect yourself from the cold or the wind.  True, it will involve paying a little bit extra, but it may be money well worth spent.

To deal with the wind, you'll need to add a windshield or windscreen to the front of your bike.  To some bikers, this makes the bike look clunky and not as cool, but the protection it affords you may be worth it.  There are several different types of windshields.  Some are built into the frame and cannot be removed, while others can actually be attached or detached as needed.  Some windshields are more aerodynamic than others, and one of the more modern variations can actually be electronically adjusted for the height of the rider.

When it comes to dealing with the cold, some bikers might say the only solution is to put on a heavy coat and deal with it.  However, if you're willing to pay a little bit of money, you can actually have a heated seat or heated handlebars install in your bike.  These items hook into your bike's electrical system for energy, and they can make a huge difference in your comfort level if you regularly ride in frigid temperatures.  Some other bikes, especially touring motorcycles, have vents that help redirect the warm air from the engine upwards towards the rider.
