Finding the Best Helmet for You

When you first start riding, you may think you don't need a helmet.  You'll be a great driver and never crash!  But there are two things to realize about helmets.  First, your driving may be impeccable, but you're not the only person on the road.  Other drivers can cause accidents no matter how careful you are.  Then there's the fact that some state laws require motorcycle riders to wear helmets.  While motorcycle helmets do look dull and can be uncomfortable, there are things you can do to fix that.  For example, you can buy a motorcycle helmet cover and add biker patches to it.

There are several different types of motorcycle helmets available.  The quarter or half shell style are often worn by bicycle riders and roller skaters, but motorcycle riders can wear them as well.  They cover the top part of your head but leave your face open.  This means you don't get as much protection from bugs or from the weather, but you also don't have something over your face, which bothers some people.  These are the type of helmets you can get covers for, so if you want to customize them with motorcycle patches, you'll want to look for one of these covers.

If you do get a full helmet, you'll be more protected from the rain and cold.  That can be a very big plus for those who live in cold areas or rainy climates.  These helmets can't be decorated with patches since they're made out of metal, but you can add different stickers and decals to them.  You can usually find stickers that match the patches on your jacket, though, so you can continue your overall theme.  Plus, if you have a passenger ride with you, you might want to get a second helmet and decorate it, too.
