Getting to Know Motorcycle Tricycles

If you are someone who enjoys motorcycle riding, then you might find yourself intrigued by the idea of riding a motorized tricycle, otherwise known as a trike.  These slightly different bikes are fun and stylish as well as being a little safer if you like to ride with a passenger.  One of the first things that you decide on when buying a trike is which wheel configuration do you want.  You can either go with delta or tadpole.

These names are based on the way the wheels of the trike are set up.  If the bike has one wheel in the front and two in back, then it is known as a delta trike.  The reason for this is that the bike resembles the Greek letter Delta.  This type of wheel configuration is also the best for carrying an extra passenger or going on long trips because the wider wheel base in the back allows for a more comfortable ride for the passenger as well as an area for luggage.  This is the most common type of trike seen on the road.

However, the second type of wheel configuration, the tadpole, is named because it has two wheels in the front and one in the back.  This type is also known as a reverse trike.  While Deltas are the most common, they are more likely to have problems with tipping.  The Tadpoles, however, are more stable under breaking conditions and can more easily corner without the constant worry and overcorrection that is required to keep Deltas from tipping over.  Whatever your preference, trikes provide a different type of motorcycle riding experience that some bikers simply love.
