There are times when, for whatever reason, you will need to put your motorcycle into storage for an extended period of time. This might be for a number of reasons. Maybe you're moving and have nowhere to keep it, or maybe you're in the military and are going to be on assignment for an extended period of time. No matter what reason, putting your motorcycle for storage is something that you will want to make sure that you take the time to do properly. This way you won't have to worry about repairs or damages, and when you're ready to ride your bike again, it will be much easier to get going.
First, take your bike out on a long enough ride to make sure that everything is functioning the way it should be. You don't want to put the bike to bed only to encounter problems later on. Stop by the nearest gas station on your way home and make sure that you fill the tank and top it off with a fuel stabilizer so that the gas will not go bad while it is in storage. Then, pull each spark plug and put a lubricant (usually a tablespoon of engine oil is recommended) inside and then follow this up by turning over the engine five or six times to help spread the oil.
After you have finished all of this maintenance, make sure you wash the motorcycle off and clear the bike of any debris. Go over each of the metal surfaces and apply lubricants and sealants to the necessary metal components and apply a thin coat of wax over the paint. Finally, make sure you cover it with breathable material to prevent further dust contamination.
