How Old Do You Have to be to Ride?

Some bikers like to think they've been a rider since the day they were born.  While you can't exactly start biking that young, it is true that some people took short rides with their parents on a motorcycle when they were fairly young.  These trips usually weren't much more than gliding through a parking lot at a very, very slow speed, but still, they were up on a motorcycle.  If you decide that riding is for you, you can look into getting a motorcycle of your very own.  However, there are specific laws and regulations about who is allowed to ride a bike.

In the United States, there are a number of different restrictions.  However, these restrictions often vary from state to state.  It is pretty common knowledge that at 15 and a half, a teen may apply for an automobile learner's permit.  This means they must drive with a fully licensed driver at all times.  However, at that same age, they may apply for a motorcycle instruction permit.  They must complete an approved motorcycle rider training course and pass both the Class F and Class M written tests.  They must also have the written consent of their parent or guardian.

Those who pass these tests will be given a license to drive a motorcycle, but there are some restrictions.  They may not ride a motorcycle with a 250 cc or more engine, can't carry passengers, and may only ride during the day.  These restrictions will be lifted when the biker turns 16.  Also at 16, a biker can apply for an instruction permit without taking the training course, but they must still pass the written tests.

These rules and regulations are, of course, different in other countries.  Be sure to check either your state or country laws regarding motorcycle licenses before you start riding.
