It's Not Hard to Make Your Own Patch

What do you do if you just can't find that patch you want?  What if you would love to have a saying on your jacket, but it's something you say a lot or a joke among your friends?  The chances of finding that on a patch is probably close to none.  You can either give up and use patches that aren't quite what you want, or you can sit down and create your own patch.  It's not as difficult as you might think, especially because you can buy blank patches.

Blank patches come in a variety of sizes: round, square, rectangular, and you can probably even find a rocker patch or two out there.  They're simple black twill patches that you can embroider on.  Note that these blank patches will not feature the iron-on plastic backing that makes it so easy to attach patches to canvas and other cloth material.  This is because it would be very difficult to embroider through the plastic backing.  This means you'll need to sew the patches on to whatever clothing you want to put them on.

You should probably draw out your design before you start embroidering it.  This way, you'll know how much space you need and where exactly to start.  It will also give you an idea of what color thread you'll want to get and where you need to switch colors.  You may also want to purchase a few blank patches so you have one or two to practice on.

As far as stitching goes, a simple running stich is fine for embroidering images or words.  If you want to do fancier stitching, that's certainly an option.  Either way, have fun making your own patches!
