Know Motorcycle Laws

One of the most important things for bikers is to be safe and to ride legally.  However, unlike automobiles, motorcycle laws do differ from state to state.  It can be difficult to know exactly what laws are in effect in which states, but if you're planning a cross-country trip or even a trip to another state, you need to do a little research so you know the law.  If you don't, you may suddenly find yourself on the side of the road with a ticket in hand, and no biker wants that!

Helmet laws are perhaps the easiest to accidentally violate.  There are 19 states that require all motorcycle riders to wear a helmet, but in 28 other states, only some riders need to have helmets (it depends on your age and some other factors).  Then there are three states, New Hampshire, Iowa, and Illinois, where helmets aren't required at all.  Bikers from those states who are planning to ride elsewhere may not even own a helmet!

Some motorcycle laws apply to your bike, not you.  For example, there are some states that require you to have a tail-light on your motorcycle, while others do not.  Some also require you to have a muffler and that your handlebars be at a certain height.

Another thing that varies from state to state is what paperwork you carry with you.  Some require you to carry registration, a license, go through a rider education certification program, etc.  While some of these do not apply if you are not a citizen of the state, such as the educational program, you should still double-check and make sure you've got all the right information before heading out.
