Memorial Day Tribute

As Memorial Day rolls around again, it is that time of year when motorcyclists will be out in full swing taking in the local scenery. You'll want to be out there, too, with the warm summer wind blowing in your face. However, for some Dallas area residents, this is a time of year to remember fallen friends and pay tribute to their memory.

In recent years, Dallas area motorcyclists have shown up on Memorial Day weekend on North Central Expressway in Dallas. Their purpose is to honor two motorcyclists who crashed in 2009 and 2010. One of the riders, Preston Cass, died in September 2010 after performing stunts along North Central Expressway. For the past two years, they have shut down traffic and painted a memorial on the freeway to remember him.

Honoring a friend who has died is always noble, though this particular instance does cause some trouble for local motorists and Dallas police. In fact, it has led to cops being a bit trigger happy; a motorcyclist was pulled over recently for 'license plate obstruction' after being seen riding in a group of motorcyclists. Obviously, both sides are a bit prickly on the issue. It is a touching way to remember a friend, though there are other ways that can be equally touching. Motorcyclists have found many ways to remember friends over the years, including riding for them in rallies, getting a biker patch to honor the person, or even getting a tattoo.

The main lesson, though, seems to be you should be careful out there. That's not to say you can't have some fun, too. But you don't want to be the next person the biker club is honoring on Memorial Day.
