In yesterday's blog I talked about decorating my new golf bag with embroidered patches. In keeping with that golf team, I'd like to write today about an idea a friend of mine came up with the first time he saw my newly decorated bag.
My friend runs an annual charity golf current to raise money for the families of police officers and firefighters who've passed away. I play every year because my own brother was one of those police officers back in 1997. Every July we play 18 holes at a local course with small cash prizes waiting to be won. But my friend was looking to make the prizes a little more memorable given the fact that a lot of our players return year after year. Upon seeing the embroidered patches on my new golf bag he decided that's he wanted to use for prizes.
For the top three finishers he is buying different colored polo shirts and having the country club's patches sewn on. Then he'll buy some stock patches designated first, second and third place, along with the year. He figures some of the regulars will appreciate having the shirts as collectibles if they're able to win one. He's hoping they become as important to our annual tournament as the green jackets are to the Masters. I don't know that I'd go so far, but I wouldn't mind winning one of them.
As a side note, the country club agreed to donate both the polo shirts and their embroidered patches. All my friend has to pay for out of tournament funds are the stock patches he plans to order online. It is quite a nice gesture by the country club; one that allows the tournament to donate more money to a worthy cause.
