Motorcycle Groups and Community Action

As the face of motorcycling has changed (and continues to change) over the recent years, there has been a number of community action motorcycle groups that have developed to show their support for a variety of causes.  Some of the most notable are Bikers Against Drunk Driving (BADD) and Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA).  These groups have worked hard to raise money and awareness of their causes and to let people know that they are more than just bikers.  There are a number of ways in which they work to accomplish this.

BADD originated in Canada in 1986, and it is designed to not only increase awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving, but also to raise money for victims and families who might have been affect by drunk drivers.  One of the ways that they do this is to encourage local chapters to have rallies, rides, and events.  These events raise awareness of how easy it is for drunk driving to cause accidents, and hopefully as more and more people learn about the real life consequences of drinking and driving, fewer will engage in it.

BACA is a completely different organization.  It does not seek to raise money but rather just to raise awareness of the problems associated with child abuse.  Also, it works to make sure that children have an environment in which they feel safe.  These bikers don't get directly involved with law enforcement or with removing children from unsafe homes; rather, they strive to help abused children by creating a safe, fun environment.

These are examples of two very different motorcycle groups that have been called to community action with two very different responses.  There are many other local biker groups that serve their local communities, and they're always looking for new volunteers and supporters.
