Motorcycle Parking

You may have read a lot of articles talking about riding motorcycles, the clothing you should wear, and road conditions you need to be aware of, but what do you know about parking your motorcycle?  There are some specific laws regarding motorcycle parking, and these laws often vary from state to state and even city to city.  If you're riding your motorcycle to work, you may not need to worry about getting towed, especially if the people in your office building know the bike is yours.  However, if you park at other businesses or in large parking lots or towers, you should look for signs concerning motorcycles or ask around just so you don't come back only to find that your bike was towed away!

Some parking lots do have special spaces reserved for motorcycle parking.  Look for signs in front of these spaces.  Sometimes, they are narrower than regular vehicle spaces.  Other parking lots do not have specific areas for motorcycles.  In this case, park in a normal space.  Don't park up on the sidewalk near the front of the store or in any area that is marked as a no-parking zone.  You may get towed or fined if you do.

If you're riding with a friend, it's usually allowed for you to park both bikes in the same parking space as long as there's room and the bikes are completely within the lines.  If you're uncertain about the legality of this, do some research on the motorcycle laws in your city.

Be sure to lock your motorcycle if you're concerned about it being stolen.  Also always strap down your motorcycle cover if you're going to cover it.  Some people may steal that, too, or it could blow away if the weather turns bad.
