Motorcycle Traditions

There are a lot of motorcycle traditions.  While not all bikers observe all of them, many do like to follow some of these fun age-old habits.  Things like riding loud bikes, wearing all leather, and covering your jacket in biker patches can be a lot of fun, especially if you've never really taken part in traditions before.  Some of these traditions are very interesting.

One fun tradition is attaching a ride bell to your bike.  These little bells make a nice jingling noise when you ride.  According to the story, a biker was riding along with a sack of toys, including small bells, when his bike was attacked by gremlins.  He crashed, and to keep the gremlins away, he started throwing the toys at them.  When he came to the bells, he rang them, hoping someone would hear and come help.  Other bikers did, and since then, riders have carried small bells to use to ward off gremlins.

Is your bike painted green?  You might want to get it redone, even if it matches all of your motorcycle patches.  According to biker myth, green bikes are bad luck.  There are a number of conflicting stories as to why green is a bad color for motorcycles, but there are some riders who absolutely refuse to get on a green bike.

If you've been in a crash, some bikers feel it's traditional to buy and wear a broken wings embroidered patch.  These patches feature angel or eagle wings that are broken and cracked, symbolizing your crash.

Your local motorcycle club may have some traditions of their own, while other bikers might have created their own personal traditions.  Of course, you don't have to observe any of these if you don't want to, but they can be fun.
