New Table Getting Done

Although the patches left my garage a few years ago to a warehouse, I always kept my office in there.  Unfortunately the AC crapped out in the garage a few weeks ago. Turns out I need a new one since the circuit board fried and the unit is discontinued it's safer and cheaper to go with a new unit. It was going to cost around $800 therefore I've decided to say goodbye to the garage and build myself a new work station in the entry room of my house.

I'm not the kind of guy that goes and buys a table from office depot. I want something custom that will fit the room nicely. Went to Home Depot and Picked up two 4x8 feet huge MDF panels. They were heavy! Some Paint and 2x4's and 2x2's to make legs and some long blue screws that will go into the cinder blocks of my wall. (I've learnt my lesson last year not to go into studs when you are trying to support a huge desk off the wall. Came home to find everything on the floor, broke my scroll saw, router table and my drill press because of that error)

This new desk could not be just a rectangular piece of two 4x8's butted against a wall, it needed curves. I don't think Steph would be too happy to find such a huge ugly structure the first thing you walked into the house. But how to cut a smooth curve? I found this piece of plastic that had an L shaped cross section and it was flexible! You can scew one side down and use the other side as a guide for your cutting tool. I screwed it onto my panels giving the table a nice curve shape. Then I made the mistake of taking my jigsaw and thinking the jigsaw would turn smoothly running up against the guide. Oh no! IT was a disaster. The blade bent and started cutting the panel at an angle. I was pissed!  Unscrewed my plastic curve guide and rescrewed it a little ways down to try another go. This time I went at it with my router and boy it came out sweet and smooth. Ran the router again this time giving the edges a curve so the table doesn't cut into your arms when you are leaning your arms on the edges.

Many coats of paint later I got myself a sweet new workstation.
