Just like driving an automobile at night, riding a motorcycle at night requires one to be a little more aware. It can be difficult to see people, animals, and road obstacles at night, especially on cloudy nights when the moon isn't providing any light at all. The risk of being in an accident is higher, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't ride at night. There are some things you can do to make it safer for you and others.
- Make sure all your motorcycle's lights are working. If they aren't, replace them before you ride at night. These lights are often the only thing other motorists can see.
- You also need to be seen at night, so don't wear dark colors. If possible, add a few reflective motorcycle patches or even wear a reflective jacket or vest while riding at night. This not only helps you be seen while riding but it also helps avoid accidents if you have to get off your bike for any reason.
- Get night riding glasses, especially if you have vision problems. Night riding glasses or goggles help enhance light and make it possible to see some things you might otherwise miss. Make sure your goggles and helmet aren't cracked, scratched, or dirty.
- Follow all traffic laws, including the speed limit. While it is incredibly tempting to let loose and see just how fast your bike can go, doing so at night isn't a good idea. You never know when another car, an animal, or even a person might appear on the road. Be responsible.
- If you feel drowsy, pull over and rest. Get some coffee if there's a gas station or restaurant nearby, or even book a hotel room if you are falling asleep.
