Patching up Rips in Your Clothing

Do you have clothing that's ripped and torn?  Jackets with a few holes in them?  You can throw them out and replace them, but new clothing isn't always as comfortable.  Your old clothes have a history, too, and you might not want to part with them.  You can always use embroidered patches as a way of breathing some life into your old clothes.  This way, you can keep wearing your comfortable outfits while covering the holes in them.

Most patches can be attached to your clothing by ironing them on.  This melts the plastic backing onto the clothing, permanently attaching it.  However, if there's a hole large enough, this may not be the best way to attach your patch.  What you can do, however, is either put a small piece of cloth over the hole first and then iron the patch over it, or you can sew the patch on.  Sew on patches are very easy to work with.  Just stitch around the border with matching thread so that the patch is securely held on.

The type of patch you use to cover the tear in your jeans, shirt, or jacket depends on the size of the rip and where it is.  It can be difficult to use biker patches in some areas, such as the knee or elbow, because these parts have to be very flexible and bend.  The only other restriction is finding a patch of the right size and shape.  However, since there are so many patches out there, there's probably at least one that will work for you.

Next time you tear your favorite jeans or find a hole in your jacket, don't get rid of it.  Pick up a patch or two and see if you can fix it.
