Recovering from a Crash

Crashing on a bike can be a horrible ordeal.  You fall off your bike, get hurt, and may even need to go to the hospital.  If you weren't wearing a helmet and dressed appropriately, you may hurt your head and get road rash.  Then there's the damage to your bike and the repairs you'll have to make to it.  All in all, a crash can cause you a lot of pain and cost you a lot.  But beyond the physical pain and the damage to your bike, you also have to deal with some mental issues.

After you've recovered and got your bike fixed up, you then have to get back on your bike and ride.  For those who just had a light crash and weren't hurt too badly, this isn't that big of a deal.  You will probably be extra cautious for a while, but that's a good thing.  You might be a little nervous the first ride or two, but after that, you'll be back to your old biker self.

It's when you've had a serious crash that resulted in major physical injuries that getting back on the bike becomes an issue.  These types of crashes usually involve broken bones and a long-term recovery plan.  However, you will physically recover with time.  But mentally, you may experience some fear of the bike.  You might think it's fine but then, when you get on the bike again for the first time, you freeze up.  You might even avoid riding.

This is pretty typical for people who have experienced a major injury.  For example, athletes who are injured are sometimes hesitant about getting back into the game or don't take risks.  However, the only way to get over this type of nervousness, no matter what it's about, is to push through it.  Get back on your bike and ride!
