Regularly Changing the Oil on Your Motorcycle

Bikes are about so much more than simply showing off your ride or decorating it with motorcycle patches.  If you are looking for an easy and effective way to increase the lifespan of your bike, then you should always make sure that the oil is regularly changed on your motorcycle.  As an estimate, the optimum time to change the oil on your bike is either every 3,000 miles or every six months, whichever comes first.  This is very similar to a car, but often because motorcycles are not ridden as regularly as full-time vehicles, it is something that can easily be overlooked or forgotten about.

For those who are riding carbureted bikes, you should be aware that it's easier for the fuel to contaminate the oil in this type of bike.  Therefore, they often suffer from more problems after being in prolonged storage because they aren't properly cared for and the oil is not routinely changed.  So it's important to make sure that you are extra cautious with motorcycles that are not fuel injected.

This is an easy piece of motorcycle maintenance that you can perform yourself if you need to.  All you have to do is to make sure that you have a few basic tools like an allen wrench, screwdriver, adjustable socket wrench, needle-nose pliers, an oil filter wrench, and a funnel.  The most difficult things you'll encounter are the need to remove part of the motorcycle body and use the needle nose pliers to pull out the filter if it is stuck. Just remember that the hour or so you spend on this regular maintenance is prolonging the life of your bike.
