Riding in City Traffic

There is a lot of difference between riding your motorcycle on the wide open roads of the country and riding it through the crowded streets of a city.  If you are used to only riding on a country road, the first time you venture into a larger city on your motorcycle you might find yourself overwhelmed and confused by all of the people and vehicles.  It can seem like an impossible task to have to keep your motorcycle going while at the same time paying attention to all of the distractions and traffic around you.  Here are a few tips to help you make it through safely.

First, be sure to pay attention to the windows of the vehicles you are passing as well as their mirrors.  If you are looking in the windows, you will notice drivers? heads.  People tend to look where they are going to drive.  So, if one of them suddenly moves their head to the right, you can anticipate them to move their car to the right.   In the same vein, if they are staring intently in one of their side mirrors, then you can anticipate them to move in that direction as well.

Do not ride directly behind a car, but rather stay to the left or the right of the vehicle.  This way if they suddenly come to a stop you will have an escape route.  Make sure that people can see you, especially at night.  If need be have reflective motorcycle patches and gear that will let them see you coming and when you're in front of them.  You do don't want to wear all black at night.  Even though you are on a bike with lights, people can still sometimes miss a biker, but a couple of small reflectors will help catch their attention.
