Should You Ride Cross Country?

Some people buy motorcycles just for short trips.  They ride with their local club, but they don't usually ride out more than a few hours from home.  Others use their bikes just for work and don't often ride them out of town.  If they go on longer trips, they take their car or other larger vehicle.  But some bikers love to ride for hours or even days.  They might go out of state to visit relatives, or they may even decide they want to ride cross country.  But are these long bike rides for you?  They're not for everyone, and if you're going to go cross country on a motorcycle, you need to know what that trip is going to entail.

Packing may be an issue if your saddlebags are fairly small and you don't have a sidecar, trailer, or luggage rack.  Your luggage space is very limited.  This means you'll probably either have to wear some clothing more than once before washing it or do laundry a lot.  You also won't have much space for souvenirs, so you'll have to keep your spending to a minimum.  One option would be to buy small items such as motorcycle patches.  Another option is to purchase items and have them shipped home, although that can get expensive.

Is your bike a cruiser or rated for long-distance travel?  Some aren't, and riding them cross country can get uncomfortable.  You'll want to make regular stops so you can stretch and walk around for a few minutes.  Otherwise, you're going to get stiff and sore from riding in the same position for hours.  You also want to be sure you have some rain gear with you just in case you run into bad weather.  You might also need to use some of your limited luggage space to carry clothing for cold temperatures.
