Taking a Biking Holiday

Family vacations rarely involve your motorcycle, especially if you have children or if your wife doesn't like to ride.  However, if you aren't married or if your spouse loves to ride with you, you might want to take a biking holiday.  While there are pros and cons to this, the biggest upside is that you get to ride your bike for hours on end.  It can be a lot of fun if you're planned everything out and are familiar with long-range riding.

That's the biggest thing: if you haven't ridden your bike for long periods of time, you may not be prepared for what it will do to your body.  You'll be in the same position for hours on a time, which can lead to sore muscles.  You need to remember to take frequent breaks, even if all you do is pull over and stretch for a minute.  Riding a bike cross-country or for long hours isn't the same as riding in a car for that same amount of time.

Another issue is how much you can pack.  If you don't have a trailer, you have a very limited space for luggage.  If you enjoy buying souvenirs or gifts for people, you'll need to be sure to leave space for that, too.  One way of handling this is to plan to do laundry on the road.  Most hotels have laundry facilities, plus there are laundromats in almost every city.

You may also want to take a look at the various biker laws and regulations in each state you're driving through.  Laws do change from state to state, so be sure you know the rules.  Riding your bike on your vacation can be amazing, but it's not the same as a road trip.  Keep this in mind, and you'll be fine.
