The Evolution of the Motorcycle Helmets and Laws

Many motorcyclists wear helmets because they want to make sure that they are safe.  However, it is also the law in most states that some form of protective headgear be worn by motorcyclists.  The motorcycle helmet was first invented in 1935 after T.E. Lawrence (better known as Lawrence of Arabia) died as a result of head trauma suffered in a motorcycle accident.  One of the doctors that tended to him decided to design something that would help protect a person's head from injury if they should get into a wreck, and in 1967, helmets became mandatory in the United Kingdom.

Since its inception there have been a number of advancements in design and technology.  There are different motorcycle helmet styles for the different types of bikes out there and the different types of riding.  For example, if you're a racer, you are more than likely going to want a full face helmet that will protect your eyes and mouth from objects at fast speeds.  There are also open face helmets that some people choose to wear since they aren't as restrictive, while others might just wear a half helmet that covers the top of their head.

Even though motorcycle helmets save lives, not every state in the United States has laws requiring that helmets be worn by motorcyclists.  If you are unsure if the state you are riding through has a law, then you'll want to check to make sure.  However, as more and more advancements are made in motorcycle helmet technology to improve safety standards, the more laws are likely to be enacted to help ensure riders, protection.
