Watching out for Motorcycle Riders in Traffic

If you drive in the traffic in urban areas you have probably noticed an increase in the number of motorcycle riders.  When you are not used to driving around a lot of motorcycles, you might get stressed watching them weave in and out of traffic.   However, there are some small things that you can do that will help you make sure that you pay attention to the motorcycles on the road and prevent any unnecessary problems or potential collisions.

First, keep an eye out for motorcycles who might ride on the median or weave between cars parked in traffic.  While this is illegal, it is something that can happen from time to time.  If you aren't aware of these riders, it might be easy to accidentally bump them when you are trying to change lanes.  So if you notice a motorcycle rider on the road that is doing this, just be sure to keep an eye on their location.

Second, if you are driving at night, you might see a pair of motorcyclists on the road.  When riding in tandem their headlights can look like those of a car, and it can be disconcerting when they go to pass and you realize that it's actually two bikes.  Most motorcyclists who ride at night will try their best to make sure they are visible with reflective motorcycle patches and other items.

Another helpful hint is to make sure that you give a motorcycle plenty of room.  Do not tailgate them as this can cause problems with their ability to maneuver properly.  Also, if there is an accident and the motorcycle rider falls off the bike, you want to make sure that you have time to avoid hitting them.  Just keep these small tips in mind around motorcyclists.
